Own Your Own Standardbred Want to know what it’s like to purchase and train a Standardbred racehorse? Through interactive, role-playing exercises, students will apply their understanding of mathematics and technology. Using teamwork to purchase and train their horses, participants will employ a set of activities that will flex their mathematic muscles as they prepare their horse for one of harness racing’s most prestigious races, the Hambletonian Stake. Activities include: Using math skills, students will create a budget to select a virtual horse to purchase, board and train. They will also analyze statistics, use probability skills to determine outcome of circumstances and learn about the different careers in harness racing. This program meets the following New York State Learning Standards: Mathematics, Science & Technology Standards #1, 2, 3, 4, 5; Career Development and Occupational Studies #1.
