For Grades Three to Six Horses were instrumental in the development of transportation, the measurement of distance and even motion pictures! This program takes students through the progression of technology through time by introducing the concept of timelines, presenting the history and development of transportation featuring the horse, and using the wheel to determine circumference and measure distances. Activities include: Viewing an introductory harness racing film, engaging in a timeline fact-hunting game and wheel distance measurement exercise, comparing a horse’s abilities for labor and transportation; and creating a harness racing flipbook to illustrate how a series of images laid the foundation for modern films. This program meets the following New York State Learning Standards: Social Studies #1, English Language Arts #1, 2; Mathematics, Science & Technology #1, 4. Lesson Plans are available for this program. |
