Biography:

Doug Ackerman was a third generation Ackerman to follow the Standardbreds. He drove his first race while on summer vacation from school in Cassopolis, Michigan in 1944. Since then he won over 1,700 races with earnings of more than $10 million. He was ranked as one of the top developers of young trotters in the nation. He trained two Two-Year-Old Trotting Colts of the Year (Noble Hustle in 1978 and Self Confident in 1981) as well as Crowning Point, who stood at Kentuckiana Farms and was the sire of Harmonious, a Hambletonian winner. He also developed pacers Happy Chatter and Albaquel. Top pacing sires Denali and Armbro Cadet also attest to Ackerman's brilliant horsemanship. Ackerman-trained horses were also very successful on the Midwestern Grand Circuit. Doug Ackerman died in North Carolina on May 28, 2014 at the age of 86.
