Jim Campbell hails from an elite Ontario harness racing family that includes his grandfather, Canadian Hall of Famer Duncan Campbell, father Jack and Hall of Fame brother John.
In 1987 Campbell first hit it big with the pacer Run The Table p,3,1:51 ($1,171,053). In 1995 Jim and John combined to win the Hambletonian with Tagliabue 4,1:53.3 ($904,600).
Jim brought special attention to his many stellar years of conditioning racehorses when in 2022 he sent out the winners of the Hambletonian - Cool Papa Bell 3,1:51.3 ($1,069,073) - and Hambletonian Oaks - Fashion Schooner 4,1:50 ($765,564) - on the same day, only the third trainer to do so. That impressive campaign helped Campbell earn the 2022 Trainer of the Year award from the United States Harness Writers Association. He joined the ranks of Billy Haughton, Joe O’Brien and Jimmy Takter as horsemen who trained two Hambletonian and two Hambletonian Oaks winners. Jim has also trained the winners of six Breeders Crown championships.
Jim Campbell is fortunate that his patrons tend to stay with him for a long and mutually profitable time. He has trained for Hall of Famers Jules and his late wife Arlene at Fashion Farms for nearly 30 years, and also for the Farber family, first Sandy and then his son Scott.
Award-winners trained by Campbell include Galleria p,4,1:49.1 ($1,814,453), Broadway Donna 3,1:51.1 ($1,434,735), his other Oaks champion Broadway Schooner 3,1.53.3 ($885,933), Real Cool Sam 2,1:52.1 ($499,196) and Broadway Hall 2,1:56.4 ($436,790).
